If this threshold hasn't already been reached, it will be in 2009. With the DTV transition we'll see more people opting for cable as an easier solution to TV needs. Meanwhile, cable companies are rolling out digital boxes in advance of the transition, ensuring that all subscribers can get VOD. If cable VOD doesn't surpass tape and DVD rentals, it will only be because of the lousy interfaces (which are pretty lousy). |

Depending on the perspective I would have to say never or 2015. It has to with video quality and control in my book, and that is an arms race between discrete physical media (e.g. DVDs) and network services (COMCAST, SHAW, Motorola). Assuming the latter, where network bandwidth can transmit video signals at a comparable quality as physical media, and STBs become significantly more capable in terms of both computing processing and storage than even TiVO, then we are looking at 7 years down the road. Currently VOD is offered by all cable networks, so penetration is there. Usage is a different question. I use both, and prefer the physical media over the network service. |

Video on demand is not in the mind of the american viewer. Recording and playback is still preferred via television. Computer and hand held devises are more into for on-demand usage. Until there is a price lower than $1 Red Box and Net Flix will continue to do will because viewing time and location is at the discretion of the customer. There is a "tangible emotion" associated with holding a DVD in your hand. "I got something for my money." That reward is not provided by on demand services. |

The biggest issue/barrier here is access to broadband. If everyone had affordable access to a high speed data network it would already be happening. |
