I've been working in the field of Interactive Television (iTV) with the market leader for digital pay-TV solutions since 2001. Currently, I am working with our product managers to help them understand the requirements for the US market. I also provide technical support to our US sales team, meeting with potential customers, capturing their requirements, drafting proposals and answering RFPs. In addition, I've developed applications in every US deployed platform, namely: OpenTV, PowerTV, MediaHighway, OCAP and EBIF. I've meet with virtually every major cable operator, both satellite operators, and one telco. I understand business requirements for iTV and what is required technically to deploy iTV applications. I now edit a magazine that covers the building of ultra-broadband networks (almost always fiber-to-the-home). iTV is enabled by such networks, because of the increased bandwidth (upstream as well as downstream), reliability, and the ability to inject local content into a video stream. I taught journalism full-time for 20 years at the graduate level, and am concerned about what we teach students in this area, to prepare them for the future. A news show that modifies itself based on user wishes -- to get more information on a specific topic, for instance -- is a powerful tool. |

I worked for a large computer chip manufacturer and had responsibility for doing and managing the deals with networks, Web site providers, DirecTV and cable partners to run an early iTV pilot to 200 households (1997-8). At the time digital receivers were not available and Intel wanted to 'show the way' using Pentium 3 in Gateway Destination living computers with large screens. I subsequently moved to an investment subsidiary and made investments in content and technology companies that would have a play with the larger deployment of iTV. More recently, I have been focused in the sports category as a business consultant, helping companies such as ESPN, VividSky, RalleyPoint.tv and others develop the 'second screen' experience on PCs and mobile devices to build a converged user experience |
